Time for another edition of CREEPY ANIMALS.
Say hi to the wolf fish (or seawolf, or wolf eel- Anarhichas lupus). It can be as big as five feet long. But don’t worry! They eat crustaceans and sea urchins and things.
Just worry if you’re studying them, or dealing with them out of the water. A grad student at my internship was giving a presentation on her fisheries class in Iceland, where they did an offshore trawl where they caught, among other things, some wolf fish. The students were warned not to put their hands anywhere near the teeth because even with PARTIALLY DISSECTED (ie with the heart cut out) these fish will BITE DOWN HARD ENOUGH ON SOMETHING TO LIFT THEIR BODY WEIGHT UP OFF OF IT.
If you ever encounter one of these fish, just remember that.
